this is the corner by the building where i work, and this flashy plastic steam chimney began it's life as an innocuous little hose with some kind of dripping condenser unit attached to the end of it sometime in the spring and only fairly recently graduated to the full-fledged permanent construction zone you see above. there is one of these in the middle of an intersection a block to the west of this spot that has been there for well over a year now. i get the impression that maybe there's not really anything that can be done to fix these steam-spewing holes that spontaneously appear in the streets and sidewalks of this fair city. the governor has his manhattan office here, and there's no sign of anyone rushing about fix this one, so i guess that must be the case.
