![]() we decided to splurge, and this was a nice room, but there was a little water damage in the bathroom and the air conditioning didn't work
![]() this area is blanketed in african palm plantations. they have developed a pygmy version that grows very close to the ground, to make cultivation easier. these berry-looking things are used to make palm oil, which became the area's major export after a disease in the banana crops caused a dip in chiquita banana's profit line.
![]() on the way to quepos/manuel antonio. we were told the bridge was out and that the delay would last for an hour, so we let this tractor cut in. turns out the bridge wasn't broken, the bridge was just a joke. an abused metal one-lane relic of a railroad bridge that they are trying to build a real highway bridge next to. it was scary crossing it when we finally got the chance, and it was one of two that we had to cross before getting where we were going.
![]() on the path by the pool, past the bar on the way back to the room from the beach. all of these places were located on the same level.
![]() oh, who cares. at the end of the day, surfers are shallow jocks.
![]() there was to be a surfing competition here the following week, which i guess explains the surf photographers and filmers everywhere. they must review their performances on tape, which gives the impression of a significantly more disciplined approach than they seemed to embody.
by the way, the costa rica lonely planet guide is a piece of shit. the more prolific of the two writers has a serious conflict or two. he clearly perceives modern costa rica to be an empty husk of its former glory, all but completely ruined by american and european tourism. honestly, his bias may have some grounding in truth, but it comes across as seriously discouraging and disappointing when trying to plan a trip to this beautiful and unspoiled country, and it's obviously quite out of place in a guide book for english speaking (i.e. american and european) tourists.
![]() but the surfing and lounging were A#1
![]() we weren't really expecting to find one of these here, but playa hermosa is one of costa rica's famed black sand beaches.
![]() too beautiful to be believed
![]() this little stretch of beach (called "playa" after the beach because it's too small to comprise a town) is one of many meccas in costa rica for surfers. they were all over the place here.
